Safety Update
National Safety Month/Heat Related Injury
When a person’s body isn’t able to maintain a normal temperature, heat-related illnesses can occur. These include heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Heat exhaustion is caused by loss of water and salt due to excessive sweating. You may have heat exhaustion if you’ve been exerting yourself in the hot summer temperatures. You may feel weak, dizzy, sick to your stomach, have muscle cramps and headaches. If you are experiencing this, notify your leader immediately, take a break, cool off and drink lots of fluids.
Heat Stroke is a more serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. Someone suffering from heat stroke will have a very high temperature, may seem confused or delirious, have slurred speech, be dizzy and even pass out. Even though the person suffering from heat stroke is very hot, they may not be sweating, and their skin will appear red.
If you or someone you are working with has any symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, notify the leader immediately.
